Case Study – Pet and Animal Heating.

The Challenge.

The Reptile Reserve is a specialist part of Nature’s Reserve Pet and Garden Centre in Upminster.

The Reptile Reserve use a number of ‘off the shelf’ reptile lamps and fittings to heat various enclosures and vivariums but a slightly bigger challenge came when they asked us to provide a heater that would be suitable for crocodiles!

The Solution

Crocodiles are cold blooded and require a body temperature of around 30-33C. To maintain this constant temperature they move back and forth between warm and cool parts of their environment. If they need to cool down they move to the water, if they need to warm up they would naturally look for sunlight. By providing a single but large infra-red heat source, the crocodiles are now provided with a spot to bask in when they need to raise their body temperature. Leisure Heating Ltd achieved this by fitting a lamp, emitting at an appropriate wavelength, to a waterproof fitting that will withstand the harsh environment in which it will be working. The crocodiles can now bask in the ‘warmth of the sunshine’ provided by the infra-red heat source.

Benefits

Leisure Heating Ltd are experts when it comes to specialist and unusual use of infra-red. Our expertise has helped many establishments and companies over the years to install heating at an appropriate or specific wavelength and save massively on energy bills whilst providing heating techniques that are not achievable using conventional hot air. The benefits of using Infra-red Infra-red heating can be used for a variety of reptiles and in particular where localised basking spots are required. In an enclosed vivarium, this kind of heat source also raises the surrounding air temperature. If heat is needed for nocturnal animals, we can provide a wavelength that does not produce light.

Case Study – Heating Large Open Buildings and Warehouses

The Problem

Jump Giants are a UK based entertainments company who have a number of venues throughout Britain. The venues consist of a number of trampoline based excercise themes and are housed in very large uninsulated buildings such as hangers and factory buildings. The problem is that it is very expensive to keep the whole building warm and is impossible to keep catering areas to a temperature where it is comfortable to sit and have a cup of tea or eat.

The Solution

By installing a number of Leisure Heating Summerglow Infra-red heaters in specific areas, customers are now kept warm by the direct radiant heat. These areas include the Cafe and dining area, the reception area and the waiting area. Jump Giants at the Loughborough site were the first to benefit from the infra-red heaters followed quickly by the Jump Giants venue at Gateshead near Newcastle.

The Benefits

Customers of Jump Giants are now kept warm directly from the infra-red heating without the need to heat very large volumes of air. Customers are now more likely to stay for longer in a more comfortable environment and more likely to make a return visit knowing that they will be warm enough even in the depths of winter

Electric Infra-red Heating

Infra-red heating is based on the transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic radiation. Infra-red emitters are classified according to the temperature dependent peak wavelength which they emit and can be short-wave, medium-wave and long-wave.

Short-wave infra-red heaters have the ability to heat people directly without having to heat up the air first. They are compact, energy efficient and easily installed.

The element used has a thermal response similar to an electric light bulb so is instant. Infra-red heaters can be easily used with PIR movement detectors or with power controllers.

The Challenge

In March 2018, Leisure Heating was approached by the production team of Alan Titchmarsh’s popular television programme ‘Love Your Garden’. They were planning the garden makeover of a Mum and super Foster Carer, in Nottingham and needed our help.

Our brief

‘We’re creating a garden for a rather special foster family. Our wonderful lady was one of the youngest foster mums in the country when she began and has continued to provide a safe and loving home for many children as well as her biological family. They are a young and vibrant bunch, with teenagers who love playing board games, watching films, having barbeques and want to socialise in their garden. We want to give them a cool place to hang out, with a variation on space for the teens and a well needed relaxation area for the parents. For this we’d love to heat the outdoor lounging area, and wondered if your products would fit the bill.’

The Solution

We, of course, took the challenge by providing two waterproof pendant heaters for their outdoor seating area. Our outdoor hanging heaters were perfect for this scheme, providing instant, low cost heating to the each area and making part of the garden into a ‘room’ that could be used in any season.

Whilst installing these heaters it quickly became apparent that there was no easy way of suspending them in the correct position to effectively heat the ‘chill-out’ area. The limited filming timetable of the makeover did not allow special brackets to be manufactured so some quick thinking was required. Leisure Heating Ltd had previously provided infra-red heating for a Church in Stilton, Cambridgeshire, and had taken out some wall brackets which were similar to those needed. With a bit of a modification, Leisure Heating returned to site the next day with two wall brackets to keep the makeover on schedule for the ‘reveal’ the following day.

Leisure Heating Ltd are proud to have assisted Alan Titchmarsh, David Domoney, Frances Tophill, Katie Rushworth and the whole ‘Love Your Garden’ team on this very worthwhile makeover.

Case Study – Smoking Shelter Heaters.

The Royal Oak lies at the heart of the village of Car Colston, Nottinghamshire and serves real ale and a range of traditional food.

The Problem

Like all pubs, the Royal Oak has had to adapt to the new laws surrounding the smoking ban and has installed a smoking shelter in the rear beer garden.

As the law requires a minimum of 50% open sides to a smoking shelter most heating solutions will not work in such an exposed environment.

The Solution

By installing two 1.5kW radiant infra-red heaters, specified and supplied by Leisure Heating Ltd, the smoking shelter now has an energy efficient heating system that heats people directly.

The heaters are designed to give an optimum level of comfort for customers throughout the whole year and whatever the weather. In addition, the heaters are controlled from two time-out switches, so smokers have to physically switch them on when they use the shelter, and they automatically switch off after a pre-set time.

The Benefits

The use of energy efficient Infra-red heating in conjunction with movement detectors has allowed the Royal Oak to use the most efficient way of heating people outdoors.

The heaters have the ability to heat people directly and not the air in between. This makes them up to 80% more efficient than equivalent gas patio heaters.

Electric Infra-red Heating

Infra-red heating is based on the transfer of thermal energy by electro magnetic radiation. Infra-red emitters are classified according to the temperature dependent peak wavelength which they emit and can be short-wave, medium-wave or long-wave.

Case Study – Shop Heating

This Chemist shop sits at the centre of the picturesque Devon village of Chagford on the edge of Dartmoor. Their pharmacy serves the local community as well as many visiting holidaymakers

The Problem

The Chemist shop is open-plan but has two distinct ‘sections’. The general heating to the establishment keeps the whole shop warm but in the winter there is an acute problem to the front of the shop due to the heat loss through the main entrance as customers come and go.

The Solution

By installing a single 1.5kW electric infra-red heater, supplied by Leisure Heating Ltd, the heat loss at the front of the shop is now compensated for by direct radiant heating.

The Benefits

Due to the effect of radiant Infra-red, people shopping in the chemist are heated directly without the need to increase the general heating. As a consequence, overall heating costs are reduced, and customers feel comfortably warm in an improved shopping environment.

The Zinc Café, Bar and Grill is a fashionable eating place in the pretty Welsh seaside village of Abersoch. Leisure Heating Ltd was asked by the Zinc Bar to provide a solution for heating their generous outside spaces.

The Problem

The Zinc Bar has a large deck area at the rear which boasts wonderful views of the Estuary. It also has tables at the front of the bar which face onto the bustling village street. These decks, furnished with tables and parasol umbrellas, were often unused in the evenings and in cooler weather, particularly in the late spring and early autumn season. A further consideration for the Zinc Bar was that gas heaters are increasingly being banned by insurance companies for safety reasons, so they were looking for alternative electric heating solutions.

The Solution

By installing twelve 1.5kw Leisure Heating ‘Summerglow’ heaters beneath their three large commercial parasols, the Zinc Bar now has an energy efficient heating system which heats diners directly, giving them the warmth of the sunshine whatever the weather.

The Benefits

The use of energy efficient Infra-red parasol heating has allowed the Zinc Bar to increase their business in an area which would normally remain empty during cooler weather. Heating outdoor areas means that existing facilities can be maximised and profits boosted. Infra-red parasol heaters have the ability to heat people directly and not the air in between.
Case Study – Infra-red for Heating Areas Within A Large Factory

The Problem

St Ann’s Sheet Metal have a traditional large factory space where they manufacture a variety of sheet metal components. The factory consists of a high and open workspace where many manufacturing jobs are carried out. It was impractical to use conventional hot-air heating because of the size of the factory and the opening of large roller-shutter doors for delivery and dispatch of materials.

The Solution

By installing twelve 2kW infra-red heaters, specified and supplied by Leisure Heating Ltd, the whole workforce are now kept warm by radiant heating.

The Benefits

Workers at St Ann’s Sheet Metal now benefit from direct radiant heating keeping them and their workstations warm. The energy efficient system means that energy costs are minimised through direct heating of the workforce rather than having to keep large volumes of air heated. Some of these heaters operate off movement sensors allowing energy to be saved if no one is detected at the workstation.

Case Study – Pavement Heating

Franco’s restaurant and bar lies in the prime location of Jermyn Street in London’s SW1 district, now re-styled and refitted to suit the modern city dweller

The Problem

Franco’s has a large pavement area with covered seating to accommodate people who want to eat or drink outside. Apart from the summer months these areas were rarely used because of the cool weather conditions and, as a consequence, passing trade was being lost.

The Solution

By installing a series of 3kW Linquartz infra-red heaters, specified and supplied by Leisure Heating Ltd, the pavement area can now be used to accommodate customers all year round.

The Benefits

The use of energy efficient Infra-red heating has allowed Franco’s to increase their business in an area that would normally remain empty for most of the year. Heating outdoor areas means that existing facilities can be maximised and profits boosted. In addition, the new smoking laws that come into place in June 2007 mean that smoking will not be permitted in indoor areas. The new heated area in front of Franco’s already caters for those customers who wish to smoke when the smoking ban comes into force.

Electric Infra-red Heating

Infra-red heating is based on the transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic radiation. Infra-red emitters are classified according to the temperature dependent peak wavelength which they emit and can be short-wave, medium-wave and long-wave.

Infra-red Heating Keeps Children Warm at Zone de l’Hippo in Quimper, France

Zone de l’Hippo is a huge indoor kids play centre in Quimper, France.

The large open and high structure means that it is difficult to keep the children warm that are playing within the building.

The Problem

The centre comprises a large barn type area which is very high and poorly insulated. Traditional hot air heating solutions are inadequate at heating premises like these due to the large thermal losses associated with the building structure.

The Solution

By installing a series of 1.5kW Linquartz infra-red heaters, specified and supplied by Leisure Heating Ltd, the play centre now has an energy efficient heating system which heats the children directly as they are playing rather than having to heat up the whole play area.

The Benefits

The use of energy efficient Infra-red heating has allowed the play barn to increase the overall effect of heating while keeping energy costs to a minimum. The new infra-red heating system does not need to be switched on many hours before the children and parents arrive. The instant heat up times of short-wave infra-red heating means that the system can be switched on just a few minutes before the doors open for business.

Electric Infra-red Heating

Infra-red heating is based on the transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic radiation. Infra-red emitters are classified according to the temperature dependent peak wavelength which they emit and can be short-wave, medium-wave and long-wave.
